Last week, I had the pleasure of sharing Wuhan with Travis Mitchell, taking him on a journey through the city's iconic landmarks, technological marvels, cultural treasures, and culinary delights. It was a day that wove together the ancient and the modern, and by nightfall, we found ourselves transported to a different era entirely. Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable day.
Morning at the Yellow Crane Tower
We began our morning at the storied Yellow Crane Tower, an ancient beacon perched high above the Yangtze River. As we climbed each level, the sweeping view of the river and the cityscape beyond unfolded before us like an ink-wash painting brought to life. Standing at the top, we took a moment to absorb the panorama, letting the gentle wind carry whispers of centuries past. Travis seemed captivated, his gaze lingering over the expanse, perhaps envisioning the same scenery that once inspired poets of the Tang Dynasty.
A Taste of Wuhan: Breakfast Delights
Descending from the tower, we made our way to a local breakfast spot, eager to introduce Travis to the rich flavors of Wuhan’s traditional morning fare. The table soon filled with bowls of hot dry noodles, golden-crusted doupi, fragrant rice wine soup, and delicate soup dumplings. The hot dry noodles, coated in a savory sesame paste, were unlike anything he’d tasted before—bold, hearty, and undeniably Wuhan. Watching him savor each bite, I could tell he was delighted, discovering a new layer of the city through its flavors.
An Afternoon of Innovation: Visiting Raycus Headquarters
After our delightful breakfast, we shifted gears from ancient traditions to cutting-edge technology. We headed to the Raycus headquarters, one of the world's leading manufacturers of fiber laser sources. As we approached the sleek, modern facility, it stood in stark contrast to the historical sites we'd visited earlier, symbolizing Wuhan's blend of tradition and innovation.
Inside, we were greeted by Raycus personnel who graciously offered us an exclusive tour of their state-of-the-art manufacturing floors and research labs. Travis, being deeply involved in the DIY fiber laser community, was particularly enthusiastic. We observed the meticulous process of laser source production, from precision engineering to rigorous quality control measures.
During our visit, we conducted an insightful interview with Raycus experts. Travis posed thoughtful questions about:
-
Cutting Parameter Variances: He was curious why cutting parameters vary so much between laser brands, even under identical conditions. The Raycus team explained how differences in laser source architecture and beam quality can impact performance.
-
Beam Reflection Protection: Travis asked if Raycus has or plans to develop laser sources with protection against reflection damage when cutting soft metals. They shared their advancements in protective technologies and future plans.
-
Choosing the Right Model: We discussed whether DIY users should consider specific differences when selecting laser models, especially since some use welding sources for cutting to save costs. The experts highlighted the importance of choosing the appropriate model for optimal results.
-
Metal 3D Printing Recommendations: For those interested in DIY Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) metal 3D printing, Travis inquired about recommended laser source models and power levels. Raycus provided valuable insights into suitable options for additive manufacturing enthusiasts.
-
Raycus's Vision: Lastly, we explored what Raycus wants the global audience to know about their company and the advancements they're striving for in future products. Their commitment to innovation and quality was truly inspiring.
The visit was enlightening, bridging Travis's passion for laser technology with the forefront of innovation in the field. Afternoon at the Hubei Provincial Museum
Leaving the world of high-tech innovation behind, we continued to the Hubei Provincial Museum, a sanctuary of relics from thousands of years of Chinese history. The transition from the ultramodern Raycus facility to halls filled with ancient artifacts was a profound experience, highlighting the diverse facets of Wuhan.
The highlight was the ancient chime bells from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng—over 2,000 years old and meticulously preserved. Standing before these grand instruments, we imagined the ancient melodies that once echoed through royal courts. Another marvel was the Sword of Goujian, a blade as sharp and gleaming as if forged only yesterday. Travis was mesmerized by the craftsmanship and the stories embodied in each artifact, a powerful reminder of the legacy that continues to shape the present.
An Evening in Tang Dynasty Splendor
As evening fell, we arrived at a venue that promised a journey back in time. We were handed robes and accessories reminiscent of the Tang Dynasty and soon found ourselves draped in flowing silks and rich colors of that era. The banquet hall was transformed—candle-lit and adorned in Tang-style decor—transporting us to a world of poets, scholars, and royal feasts. The experience was surreal, and as we dined on dishes inspired by ancient recipes, it felt as though we were living a scene from a historical drama.
