Field Service Case · South Korea
A failed laser-delivery fiber stopped a Bystronic ByStar 3015 from operating normally. Sky Fire’s field team replaced the original MAX Photonics laser source with a 12kW Raycus unit, completed commissioning and verified the repair through on-site sheet-cutting tests—all in one day.

The Failure: A Burned Laser-Delivery Fiber
The customer’s Bystronic ByStar 3015 used a MAX Photonics laser source. The source developed a serious fault when its laser-delivery fiber burned, interrupting the beam path between the source and cutting head and preventing normal cutting operation.
A source failure does not automatically mean that the complete laser cutting machine must be replaced. The machine structure, motion platform, CNC, cutting table and other major assemblies may still remain serviceable. In this case, the more focused solution was to retain the existing ByStar 3015 platform and replace the failed source.
The service objective: restore the existing machine by replacing the failed laser source, confirming system compatibility and completing an actual cutting test before handover.
What We Replaced—and What We Retained
The scope centered on the failed laser source. Sky Fire installed a 12kW Raycus unit while retaining the existing Bystronic machine platform and compatible cutting-system components.
| Removed or Replaced | Installed or Checked | Retained |
|---|---|---|
| Failed MAX Photonics laser source and damaged delivery fiber | 12kW Raycus fiber laser source and its delivery connection | Bystronic ByStar 3015 machine platform |
| Source-side configuration affected by the replacement | Power, cooling, control, alarm and safety-related connections | Existing motion system, table and machine structure |
| Settings no longer applicable to the failed source where required | Commissioning settings for the replacement source | Existing cutting-system components that remained compatible |
A laser source replacement involves more than moving one unit out and another unit in. The replacement source must work correctly with the machine’s electrical supply, cooling system, control commands, alarm signals, safety chain, delivery fiber and installed cutting system.
One Day of On-Site Replacement and Commissioning
Sky Fire’s engineers traveled to the customer’s factory in South Korea to complete the work on site. The complete replacement and commissioning process was finished in one day.
Step 1: Remove the Failed Source
After the equipment was placed in a safe service condition, the team disconnected and removed the failed MAX Photonics source affected by the burned laser-delivery fiber.
Step 2: Install and Integrate the 12kW Raycus Source
The replacement source was installed and connected to the existing machine systems. The engineers checked the relevant power, cooling, control, alarm, safety and beam-delivery interfaces required for operation.
Step 3: Commission the Machine
Before cutting, the team checked laser output and the operating condition of the cutting system. Commissioning was carried out on the customer’s actual machine rather than treating the source as an isolated component.
Cutting Tests After the Source Replacement
After installation and system checks, the team carried out on-site sheet-cutting tests. The footage shows the ByStar 3015 cutting circular holes, elongated openings, straight contours and irregular profiles.
The test allowed the team and customer to verify:
- stable laser output during cutting;
- normal piercing and contour transitions;
- coordinated movement between the machine and cutting head;
- continuous cutting across different programmed features; and
- operation of the replacement source under an actual cutting load.
The field-service result: the replacement source was integrated successfully, the machine completed the on-site cutting trial and cutting operation was restored within the one-day service visit.
Why Replace the Source Instead of the Complete Machine?
When the frame, axis system, table, CNC and other major assemblies remain in suitable condition, replacing a failed laser source can preserve much of the customer’s existing machine investment and production setup.
However, the decision must be based on the specific machine. Before recommending a source replacement, the engineering assessment should consider:
- the mechanical condition of the existing machine platform;
- source compatibility with the CNC, controls and safety circuit;
- cooling capacity and electrical requirements;
- delivery-fiber and cutting-head compatibility at the selected power; and
- the customer’s material, thickness range and production requirements.
For this South Korean project, the existing ByStar 3015 platform could be retained and returned to cutting operation after the 12kW source replacement and commissioning.
Engineering Takeaway
This case shows a practical repair path for a high-power fiber laser cutting machine affected by a source or delivery-fiber failure. The field team replaced the failed MAX Photonics source with a 12kW Raycus unit and validated the complete system on the customer’s machine.
What This Case Confirms
- A laser-source failure does not necessarily require replacement of the complete machine.
- Compatibility checks and commissioning are essential parts of a source replacement.
- An actual cutting test provides stronger validation than confirming laser emission alone.
- For this project, replacement, commissioning and cutting validation were completed in one day.
Frequently Asked Questions
